By lending an ear to the "silent noise" that humans have filtered out in pursuit of optimization, might something new come into view? This work invites a fresh reconsideration of advertising — content that has, in recent years, been aggressively optimized away as noise.
By engaging with unoptimized information — advertisements in their raw form — the work prompts reflection on the noise that optimization has gradually erased. Time spent on smartphones has grown steadily in recent years, with social media contact time increasing dramatically in particular. On these platforms, the delivery of advertising has been refined to an extreme degree. Magazines and television commercials of the past were never so ruthlessly optimized; information existed in abundance, without agenda. Yet perhaps it was precisely within that unfiltered flood of information — encountered without intention — that unexpected emotion and discovery once lived.
