"Yoru ni Kakeru"
YOASOBI feat.Masamune (2020)

Description:

An AR music video work for YOASOBI's Yoru ni Kakeru (entry for the NEWVIEW Cypher Music category). The overall visual direction draws from the song's breathless, driving pop energy, built around a base palette of pink and blue.

At one point in the video, a figure descends from above — a deliberate reference to the original novel "The Temptation of Thanatos," upon which the song is based. In the source material, the figure the woman perceives is the god of death, Thanatos, who is said to appear when a desire for death exists within a person. In the latter half of the original story, it is revealed that the woman appearing in the lyrics is herself a god of death — one who manifests from a man's desire to die, making her visible to him. The lyric "take my hand" is intended to subtly suggest the protagonist entering into a contract with death.

The figure falling during the line "before the night that never ends descends" is, precisely, that god of death. In the earlier section — "a dazzling tomorrow that fills my thoughts" — the brightness of the light is intensified to express blinding radiance; in the following scene, representing the endless night, the lights are cut entirely. Throughout, the visuals are composed in deliberate synchrony with the lyrics.
