Under The Concrete. (2020)
Description:
"The man-made cannot defy nature. And nature, too, cannot defy the man-made."
My hometown of Tottori was nothing like the noise and density of Tokyo — it was a place overflowing with nature. Just beside our house stood a mountain. When I think about where the boundary between that house — a man-made thing — and the mountain truly was, I find myself feeling now that it may have been simply whether or not the ground beneath was paved in concrete.
As a child, I would wade into the irrigation ditches nearby, catching crayfish and pond snails to keep at home. But those very ditches have gradually been filled in and buried. The waterways that were once my playground are gone, and the creatures that lived there are now forced to survive in lightless underground channels, partitioned off by concrete.
What does the world look like through the eyes of nature, encroached upon by the man-made? We often say that nature — through disaster — is something that cannot be denied. But perhaps the reverse is also true: nature, too, finds itself unable to defy the man-made.
In a human-centric future where everything is optimized for mankind, what kind of relationship will exist between humanity and nature? What will harmony even mean...?
