Atoms (2020)

Description:

What is a human being? At the macro level, we take the form of something called a person. At the micro level, we are nothing more than a collection of particles. In this work, as the viewer moves in front of a camera, their own image dissolves into particles in real time. Who am I? What is a human being? What do we feel as we watch ourselves disintegrate — reduced, atom by atom, back to their most fundamental state?

The piece uses a webcam to detect motion, transforming areas of movement into particles. Technically, this is achieved through TouchDesigner's Optical Flow operator, which calculates the difference between frames and applies effects to the regions of change. To further heighten interactivity, an ultrasonic sensor measures the distance of the viewer's palm, and the effects shift in response to proximity.
