SWITCH (2021)

Description:

Smartphones have become deeply embedded in the fabric of everyday life. Many people find themselves reaching for their phones while walking — knowing the risks, yet unable to resist the pull of dependency. Meanwhile, across YouTube, Twitter, and other social platforms, the "self that exists inside the phone" and the "self that exists in reality" have grown increasingly apart. The word avatar originally referred to one's appearance in a virtual world separate from oneself — but in the modern age, can we say with confidence which is the avatar: the self inside the phone, or the self in the real world?

On live streams and in videos, people perform a version of themselves to attract viewers. What does it truly mean to be yourself — to be authentic? In this film, a character exists who continues streaming even after being replaced by someone else. If the world we believe to be reality has itself become the virtual, and we are already living as avatars, then perhaps switching one person out for another changes nothing at all.
